Certified medical coders are basically individuals, who dedicate their careers to medical coding. They undergo anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and other coding training programs. On completion of coding training programs they have to take medical coding examination. The whole process from start to finish could take anywhere between 6-12 months. This depends on educational background and ability of an individual. On completion of coding examination coders are provided with certification.

AHIMA(American Health Information Management Association) provide three different types of coding certification

  • CCA (Certified Coding Associate) - This certification means an individual is a professional in coding both Physician and Hospital Practices.
  • CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) - This certification means an individual is a professional in coding hospital practices.
  • CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist) - This certification means an individual is a professional in coding physician practices.


AAPC(American Association Of Professional Coders) provide three different types of coding certification

  • CPC (Certified Professional Coders) - This certification means an individual is a professional in coding physician practices.
  • CPC-H (Certified Professional Coders) - This certification means an individual is a professional in coding hospital practices.
  • CPC-P (Certified Professional Coders) - This certification means an individual is a professional in adjudicating provider claims.


On an average coding basic training, examination preparations, exam fees and books cost about $4000 to $5000. Certified medical coders in the US get paid about $35,000 to $55,000 per annum.
